Ronaldo's 71st goal for his country

Image
Ronaldo's 71st Portugal goal moved him joint third with Germany's Miroslav Klose on the list of Europe's highest international goalscorers Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his home island of Madeira, a day before the local airport is to be named in his honour, as Portugal surrendered a two-goal lead to lose to Sweden. Portugal led through Ronaldo's 71st international strike and an Andreas Granqvist own goal. But a Viktor Claesson double and Cavaco Cancelo's injury-time own goal secured a remarkable turnaround for the Swedes.

Messi's Brazilian teammate Neymar is third with 55.5 million euros ahead of Real Madrid's Welsh forward Gareth Bale (41m) and Argentina's Ezequiel Lavezzi (28.5m), who plays for Hebei Fortune.

Dele Alli: three-game ban

Image
Dele Alli was sent off in the 39th-minute against Gent as Spurs were knocked out of the Europa League Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has been banned for three European matches after being sent off against Gent at Wembley in the Europa League in February. Alli was dismissed for a challenge on Brecht Dejaegere in the 2-2 draw. Should Spurs secure a top-three Premier League finish, Alli would miss half of their Champions League group campaign. Meanwhile, Arsenal have been fined £4,300 after some of their fans ran onto the pitch during the 5-1 Champions League home defeat by Bayern Munich. Diego Costa wanted to leave Chelsea in the summer

Image
Diego Costa admits he tried to push through a move back to Atletico Madrid before eventually going to Chelsea boss Antonio Conte with his "tail between his legs". The striker was heavily linked with a move back to his former club last summer after enduring a frustrating 2015/16 season as Chelsea failed miserably to defend their Premier League crown. The two clubs were reportedly in negotiations over the transfer but talks broke down, which meant Costa had to build bridges with Conte

Argentina face Chile

Image
The unthinkable prospect of a World Cup without Argentina or Lionel Messi could move a step closer to becoming reality on Thursday as the South American giants prepare to face arch-rivals Chile in a crucial battle on the road to Russia 2018. Argentina, who last failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1970, saw their progress towards next year's finals go awry in 2016 when back-to-back draws with Venezuela and Peru were followed by defeats against Paraguay and Brazil. Although they bounced back to beat Colombia 3-0 in a home qualifier last November, they remain outside the automatic qualifying places in fifth place, with 19 points from 12 games. A defeat against fourth-placed Chile on Thursday in Buenos Aires would leave Argentina further adrift of the automatic qualifying spots. And if Colombia beat lowly Bolivia in their home game, as expected, Argentina could even finish the day further down the pecking order, outside of the fifth-place playoff berth they currently occupy. Middelburg-1 Manchester United-3

Marouane Fellaini has only scored one Premier League goal this season for Manchester United Manchester United moved up to fifth in the Premier League as Middlesbrough's first game since sacking manager Aitor Karanka ended in defeat. Ashley Young's deep cross found Marouane Fellaini at the back post to head past Victor Valdes, before Jesse Lingard's terrific strike doubled United's lead after the break. Boro, with caretaker boss Steve Agnew in charge, were invited to apply pressure and when Chris Smalling made a mess of an easy clearance in the box, substitute Rudy Gestede pounced. But former Manchester United keeper Valdes slipped in stoppage time and Antonio Valencia's tap-in secured the three points. Jose Mourinho's side leapfrog Arsenal and Everton into fifth, while Middlesbrough remain 19th in the table and are now five points from safety. Having parted ways with Karanka on Thursday, Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson charged Agnew with helping Mid

FC Rostov pitch closed by Russian Premier League after Mourinho criticism

A week after Jose Mourinho criticised their pitch, the Russian Premier League has "banned" FC Rostov from hosting league games due to "shortfalls" in the playing surface.Manchester United drew 1-1 at the Olimp-2 Stadium in their Europa League last-16 first-leg tie last Thursday."It's hard for me to believe we are going to play on that field, if you can call it a field," Mourinho had said. Rostov now have until 24 March to bring their pitch up to standard. The pitch was dry and bobbly, and after the match Mourinho said the conditions made it "impossible to play a passing game". The Russian Premier League told BBC Sport that Rostov will have their pitch inspected again on 24 March, with their next home game on 31 March against FC Krasnodar. Uefa had deemed the pitch playable for the Europa League game, but the Russian Premier League say they have different regulations in place. United and Rostov play the second leg at Old Trafford on Thu

Real Madrid 2-1 Real Betis Sergio Ramos has scored 10 goals this season, including a point-saver against Barcelona at the Nou Camp in December Sergio Ramos headed a late winner as Real Madrid recovered from a howler by keeper Keylor Navas to beat 10-man Real Betis to go top of La Liga. Navas escaped a red card for fouling Darko Brasanac, then spilled Antonio Sanabria's shot into his own net. Cristiano Ronaldo headed Madrid level from a Marcelo cross before half-time. Betis defender Matteo Piccinini was sent off for dragging back Lucas Vazquez with 12 minutes left, before Ramos powered in a Toni Kroos corner. Morata cannot Bale out Madrid - but Ramos can Captain Ramos has made a habit of scoring vital goals for Zinedine Zidane's side this season - most notably a last-minute equaliser against Barcelona and a late winner against Deportivo, both in December . The centre-back's power from set-pieces proved vital as Real did not quite click in attack without the susp

We don’t need referees’ help: Zidane

Image
We don’t need referees’ help: Zidane Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane had a pointed message for La Liga rivals Barcelona on Saturday by claiming the European champions "don't depend" on anyone else to win. Barca produced the biggest comeback in Champions League history on Wednesday with a remarkable 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain to complete a 6-5 aggregate win. However, Barca's win was overshadowed by a series of controversial calls from German referee Deniz Aytekin as he awarded the Catalans two penalties. "Real Madrid is unique," said Zidane when asked if controversial decisions in favour of Madrid are given more attention in the media. "We know that we annoy certain people, but that is not going to change. "If we win it is because we've played well, we don't depend on anything or anyone else." Madrid trail Barcelona by a point at the top of La Liga, but have a game in hand over their title rivals. Wh
